The Archeaological Museum in Agios Nikolaos, Crete is currently being renovated and is set to reopen with more exhibits. For the purposes of the renovation, we undertook the task of 3D Scanning of several artefacts of different kinds, which we completed in early September 2022.
3D Scanning the artefacts will allow the Museum specialists to design new supports and pedestals to fit each item perfectly. Having the 3D files available will help study how the artefacts will be arranged inside the Museum. The goal is to showcase the wonderful findings of the area in the safest and most aesthetic manner.
At the same time, a digital library is created, which will serve as a record of the findings, as well as for academic research and to promote the Museum to new visitors.
The scan was carried out using a portable white light 3D scanner, inside the Museum premises. The staff enthusiastically participated, helping to ensure the safety of the artefacts. To protect the exhibits, it wasn't possible to spray them with non-reflective spray or apply targets; however, due to their lighlty-coloured, non-reflective surface, suitable lighting conditions and the experience of the scanner operator, we were able to scan them accurately and efficiently.
The items we scanned included pottery, column capitals, statues and other findings. After the scan, we processed and cleaned all of the point clouds and delivered the Mesh files to the Museum. The .stl files contain all the information necessary for any measurement or modelling process.
